New figures have revealed that the number of child sexual offences recorded by Thames Valley Police remain high – despite a drop of more than 20 per cent.
The figures compiled the NSPCC show that in the Thames Valley 3,004 child sexual offences were recorded by police in 2022/23.
This latest figure is 22 per cent lower than 2021/22 when 3,849 offences were recorded in the Thames Valley.
The Freedom of Information data revealed that in total 86,962 child sexual offences were recorded by police across the UK in 2022/23, which ‘remains one of the highest on record’ since the annual research was started 16 years ago.
Types of offences included rape, sexual grooming, sexual assault and sexual exploitation.
The figures come as the NSPCC launches a new campaign in partnership with the Home Office to combat child sexual abuse.
Together, the organisations are encouraging people to contact the NSPCC Helpline if they are
concerned that a child may be at risk.
The campaign also encourages the public to report instances where there are concerns a child might be experiencing sexual abuse.
Adults concerns about a child’s wellbeing or safety can contact the NSPCC Helpline at help@nspcc.org.uk or by calling 0808 800 5000.
Children can contact Childline at 0800 1111 or at www.childline.org.uk
People should always call 999 if they suspect that a child is in immediate danger.
