AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U15s put in a fine performance on Valentine’s Day, but were left broken-hearted after slipping to a 2-1 defeat at home to Bracknell-based EPC REDS U15s.
On the first sunny morning of the year, the game was played at high pace throughout, although in truth there were few clear goal-scoring opportunities for either team.
EPC Reds, playing in blue, had the first shot on goal with only seconds on the clock. The Hurricanes were already working hard in both defence and attack, and it paid dividends when they went ahead after five minutes. Dominic Ellis’s long throw-in fell nicely for Rupert Hepburn, who shot across goal from inside the area.
The Reds continued to pile on the pressure. Goalkeeper George Hodges came out to make a confident save, but was back on his line to deal with the second ball. Eventually the Reds’ pressure told and they levelled the scoring. A long ball down the left was crossed in, and with numbers committed forward were able to slot the ball home.
From here, the first half offered few chances for either side. The Hurricanes worked hard in defence with Ellis, Adam Hanley and Jack Venn all making critical tackles. Towards the end of the half the Hurricanes were on the attack through Will Clarke’s long shot and two corners, but at the break the scores were still level. The Hurricanes started the second half brightly with Clarke looking for goal again, but it was the Reds who made the decisive move. A powerful shot from outside the area was on target to put them ahead.
The game was still quite open. The Reds put a couple of shots well wide and hit the post with a third. Jack Tookey and Louie Williams made important blocks.
The Reds were awarded a penalty which was well saved by goalkeeper Harrison Carpenter Buckett. Ultimately, neither side could add to their total despite plenty of effort.
