Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh

THE Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh proudly hosted its annual charity golf day at Sonning Golf Club on July 4 with a record 26 teams and more than 100 players.

The event enjoyed excellent golfing weather and an impeccably maintained course contributed to a memorable day.

The team event involved spirited competition, culminating in victory for the Guildford Four, captained by Ian Heighes.

The event extended into the evening with a dinner compered by golfing comedian Aaron James, who also conducted a charity auction featuring items donated by local golf clubs and businesses.

The auction and other fundraising activities raised more than £8,000.

The majority of these funds will benefit Rotary’s Community Food Aid and children’s programmes, which supports local food banks, churches, families, and various local children's charities.

Since the pandemic, the club has donated more than £30,000 to these vital causes.

The event’s success was bolstered by generous sponsorship from Financial Planning Partners. Scott Trathen, joint president of the club, said: “It was a superb way to raise money for our programme.

“Everyone enjoyed a great day and contributed generously to all the fundraising activities.

“We are grateful for the support of so many local businesses, especially Sonning Golf Club.”

The Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh has raised more than £500,000 for local and international causes since it was founded in 1989.

With 34 members currently, it serves the communities in east and south Reading, including Sonning, Wargrave and Twyford.
