Rampant Rebels thrash Chelmsford City 5-0 to pull clear of danger

Slough Town lifted themselves six points clear of the National League South relegation zone with a stunning 5-0 home win over Chelmsford City at Arbour Park.

The Rebels were near on unplayable in the first half and raced into a comfortable and commanding 3-0 half-time lead with a brace from Wiktor Makowski and a first for the club from the on-loan Reading forward Basil Tuma.

The home side then eased further clear of their visitors with second half goals from Tyrese Dyce and Harvey Walker - with all five goals coming inside 69 minutes.

On another day Scott Davies side might have had even more, but five was more than enough to convince the player manager he’s working with a special, if slightly inconsistent, group of players.

Their recent form may be a little up and down in terms of results, but this was their fifth win in seven league matches, and they’ve now earned 15 of their 34 points to date since Boxing Day.

This emphatic victory, and their 3-0 win over Hemel Hempstead a couple of weeks ago has also boosted their goal difference, which is now the envy of most of the teams below them in the table.

The team’s recent stumbles - away to Chippenham Town and at home to Tonbridge Angels last Saturday - mean Davies and his squad can hardly rest on their laurels. They were only three points above the drop zone heading into today’s fixture, but their recent form would suggest they’ll finish higher than their current league position of 17th.

As home matches go, this was close to perfect for the rampant Rebels, but it took the hosts a while to find their feet.
They took the lead in the 19th minute when Tuma played a neat one-two with Makowski before calmly steering the ball into the back of the net at the near post.

A clumsy foul from Crowther on Makowski in the box led to the Rebels being awarded a penalty in the 28th minute. Crowther received his marching orders - a devastating blow for the Clarets - and Makowski dusted himself down to smash the spot kick into the corner to make it 2-0.

The Rebels weren’t about to let this opportunity slip through their grasp. Jared Myers came close to making it 3-0 almost immediately before Slough were awarded a second penalty in the 41st minute.

This time it was Tuma who was carelessly brought down as he charged into the area and Makowski once again made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Three up against 10 men, the game was as good as won, but the home side weren’t about to let up.
Tyrique Clarke returned the ball into the area in the 55th minute for Dyce to slot home their fourth and substitutes Johnny Goddard and Harvey Walker combined for the fifth in the 69th minute. Goddard’s ball into the middle was palmed only as far as Walker who managed to stab home at the second attempt.

There were no further goals, but Slough saw the game through for their biggest win of the season. It should fill them with plenty of confidence ahead of next Saturday’s trip to eighth placed Maidstone United.
