Young disabled people in Slough have been invited to kickstart a sporting journey at a free sports taster session this Saturday morning (March 2).
The session, aimed at all disabled children aged between 8 and 14 years old, offers the chance to have a go at sports including wheelchair rugby, disability football and inclusive cycling.
Run by sports company Active in the Community, the Let's Play and Connect event takes places place between 9am and 12pm at Herschel Grammar School.
Project co-ordinator, Vishnu Vijayakumar said: “We are open to all types of disability.
“The primary goal is to help children introduce physical activity into their routines and to socialise and make friends.
“-And if anyone wants to take it further - maybe develop a career out of sports in the future - we do have national sports programmes we can offer.”
The three-hour event is split into two periods; a session between 9.30am and 10.30am; and another between 10:45am and 11:45am.
For the activities, children will have access to Herschel Grammar's sports hall, Multi-Use Games Area and astroturf pitch. Accessible toilets, changing rooms and parking are also be provided.
Active in the Community already run sessions elsewhere in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire but are looking to expand to Slough to increase opportunities for young disabled people to enjoy sport.
Vishnu said: “We're targeting young kids for this event and then hoping to further expand our events to include more age groups for boys and girls."
"There haven’t really been any specific sports disability events for kids in Slough over the last few years, so we are trying to fill a gap, but we want more participants to come forward.”
Inclusive cycling requires no booking however those wanting to try out football, rugby or other sports will need to book in advance.
